Fighter Pilots and Heros

For the rest of the month, which is designated “Black History Month”, you will hear about the many achievements of black people that began when they arrived at our shores as indentured slaves, with their accomplishments continuing up to the present time.  You will hear about black people that made their mark in the arts, science and mathematics, music and entertainment, business and of course sports.  What you will probably not hear about is blacks as fighter pilots.

Throughout the duration of WWII, almost everyone had absolutely no idea that we had four squadrons of black fighter pilots.  Even today, after all of the publicity they have received, most people still have no idea what they did and more importantly, that they had to fight two air forces in order to be recognized, the Luftwaffe and the US Army Air Corp.

While there has been a TV special and a feature film on the subject, neither of them told the full story. This is our subject matter for today – and I want to thank the Aventura History Club for the opportunity permitting me to make this presentation.
